Does your idea of a perfect winter getaway involve snowshoes and adventure?
Maybe, you’d opt for a crackling fireplace and a glass of wine. Thankfully, the Alleghany Highlands of Virginia is a delightful winter destination for recreation and relaxation.
Cool Outdoor Fun
Douthat State Park remains open daily throughout the season for day use, as well as winter camping. There are 43 miles of trails, some of which offer stunning views of the surrounding mountains and Lake Douthat. A winter hike is not only invigorating, it reveals much about the park’s wildlife. It’s a great time to spot many bird species and be on the lookout for fresh tracks in the snow left by deer, fox, rabbits and more. Keep in mind that some services at Douthat State Park are not available during the winter. The park’s official website is a great resource for winter activities and tips for being prepared for a safe and fun cold weather adventure.
Warm and Cozy
A weekend in the mountains calls for comfortable and unique accommodations. Some visitors to the Alleghany Highlands choose a rental cabin so they can watch the snow flurries from the comfort of their private living room. AirBnB and VRBO offer loads of options, including some with mountain or river views.
The area’s award-winning B&Bs each offer a unique and personal experience. You can choose one that is close to town for easy access to dining and shopping, or one that is more secluded for serenity and mountain views. Experience Uniquely Alleghany hospitality, not to mention some delicious homemade breakfast each morning.
Picture Perfect
Two of the most photographed icons in the mountains of Virginia are located in the Alleghany Highlands. And they are even more spectacular in the winter.
Humpback Bridge is the oldest remaining bridge of its design in America. Located in a wayside park only three miles from downtown Covington, it’s a postcard-perfect snapshot that includes a famous LOVEworks display.
Falling Spring Falls is a majestic 80’ waterfall with an expansive westward view as a backdrop. At some points during the winter if conditions are just right, the falls will freeze. It’s an awe-inspiring reminder of nature’s beauty.
Chilling with Friends
The charming downtowns of Covington and Clifton Forge are fun to explore on a brisk winter day. While checking out the historic buildings and architecture, stop in and browse some locally-owned shops and art galleries. When you have worked up an appetite from strolling and treasure hunting, try a steaming latte and pastry or lunch.
Events are planned all winter long at The Historic Masonic Theatre. The beautifully restored facility hosts movie nights, concerts, theatrical performances and occasional open-mic nights. Dinner and a show with friends is great way to finish a perfect winter day in the Alleghany Highlands.
