Douthat State Park remains open daily throughout the season for day use, as well as winter camping. There are 43 miles of trails, some of which offer stunning views of the surrounding mountains and Lake Douthat. A winter hike is not only invigorating, it reveals much about the park’s wildlife. It’s a great time to spot many bird species and be on the lookout for fresh tracks in the snow left by deer, fox, rabbits and more.

Humpback Bridge is the oldest remaining bridge of its design in America. Located in a wayside park only three miles from downtown Covington, it’s a postcard-perfect snapshot that includes a famous LOVEworks display.
Falling Spring Falls is a majestic 80’ waterfall with an expansive westward view as a backdrop. At some points during the winter if conditions are just right, the falls will freeze. It’s an awe-inspiring reminder of nature’s beauty.
Chilling with Friends
The charming downtowns of Covington and Clifton Forge are fun to explore on a brisk winter day. While checking out the historic buildings and architecture, stop in and browse some locally-owned shops and art galleries. When you have worked up an appetite from strolling and treasure hunting, try a steaming latte and pastry or lunch.
Events are planned all winter long at The Historic Masonic Theatre. The beautifully restored facility hosts movie nights, concerts, theatrical performances and occasional open-mic nights. Dinner and a show with friends is great way to finish a perfect winter day in the Alleghany Highlands.
